Summary0002552: Non-standard and ugly appearance of folder tabs under macOS
DescriptionThe appearance of folder tabs under macOS is non-standard and ugly.

It is non-standard, because it doesn't take up the entire width of the File panel (as it is the case with the Finder or with Commander One under macOS, for example). Another valid option would be to put the folder tabs to the left hand side (as it is the case with Crax Commander under macOS).

It is ugly, because the folder tabs are located in the middle between the light grey and the dark grey area. (Why is there a dark grey area at all? In the Windows and Linux versions of Double Commander, there are not two shades of grey here, but only one.)

Try Cocoa version from snapshots.

Same problem with Cocoa version from snapshots, see screenshot2.jpg.

In addition, with that version, the font sizes of some gui objects are too small, and the app icons are damaged and have different sizes, see screenshot2.jpg.

PS: Meanwhile I updated to macOS Big Sur, maybe the new problems have something to do with that, don't know.

I don't see a big difference with standard tabs:

https://developer.apple.com/documentation/appkit/nstabview

Cocoa version use native tabs control.

Please find attached screenshots from the leading file managers on Mac: Finder (from Apple), ForkLift, Path Finder, Crax Commander, Commander One. These can be regarded as the "standard" on macOS. In my opinion, the appearance of folder tabs in Double Commander should be adapted to that standard. It is true that tabs in other contexts look different, but here in this ticket we are talking about the special case of folder tabs.

I have checked again the QT version of Double Commander under Big Sur. It has new problems which were not present under Catalina: The font size of the path bar is too small, and the text in the folder tabs looks weird. Please check it yourself, then you'll see what I mean. Furthermore, the app icons of many apps (e.g. Pages.app or GarageBand.app) are missing. The Cocoa version of Double Commander has even more problems: All app icons are broken there.

Also tabs in Safari follow that standard.

I don't know how to do it. Standard NSTabView is center aligned. May be these applications use some other control instead NSTabView.

Update 2021-01-10: I have uploaded a screenshot of doublecmd-0.9.10-9640.qt.x86_64 on macOS Big Sur.

Please note:
1. The font of the folder tab is drawn outlined (not filled) --> almost unreadable.
2. Many program icons are completely missing or shown as question marks.
3. The font in the directory hotlist menu is cut off at the upper and lower side.

Problem 1 and 3 do not occur with doublecmd-1.0.0-9640.cocoa.x86_64.
