Summary | 0001249: Remember sorting options per directory
Description | In general I'd like to sort my files by file name, but in some special cases it would be desirable to remember a different sorting type. For example, I'd like to keep my download folder sorted by date. It would be great to have a global setting like it already exists, and then (optionally) apply changes to the sorting order only to the currently viewed directory. So for example when I click the date column to sort by date in my download folder and then change to another directory, the other directory should be shown using the default sort order again, or using its own sort order if it has been visited before.

Disagree. It will make tons of settings over time. And you can not simply reset sorting for some dir once you don't need it. Or you'll need special UI for this. But this can be done in other way, not for all dirs, but for dirs in "Directory hotlist". Or you can simply use locked tab with Downloads dir opened and desired sorting. |
Hence it should be optional as I said. I realize that not everyone needs it, but in my particular case there are too many directories for which I'd permanently need a fixed sorting order (not just the Downloads directory), so having them all pinned is simply not feasible. |

douchecommander, I'm doing about the same thing as you. They are some specific folder I like to have sort by date with the most recent on top. These "special" directory are not thousands of them. Just a few. So I added them an en entry in the "Hot Directory". Also, for these one, when you configure them, you may set the way they will be sorted. So not only it will jump to the "download" folder in your case, but no matter the current sorting, it will switch to the one you've configured in the hot directory. Also, to add to this, I've set the "Tree view menu" to be avaiable to the hot directory request (not a current feature but eventually will be in normal relase I hope). So let's suppose I want to go to download directory I will type CTRL-D to invoke the hot directory requester. Because I have the "tree view menu" enabled for that I will type simply d-o-w-n... chances are that there will be just that folder remaming, I press ENTER and then it will switch to the download folder AND sorted by date and time like I want. Fast enough? :-) |
I added an (ugly!) animated gif to the case here to show an example. See when I switch to the hot dir download folder, it switches the sort method to date automatically. But you would be right to say it did just half the work since next time you change location, it will still be sorted by date and not come back to name for example... Let's say I gave you a way to do half of the work! :-) |
I just added a second gif better to see what I meant. That's it, I won't bother more. :-) |
I agree with the request. Would be useful for download folder and folders populated by others. |
